Zebra Card Printer Ribbon Announcement

Zebra has recently become aware that non-genuine ribbons are being marketed for use with Zebra® card printers, and that certain performance claims are being made about these ribbons. We share your concern that these non-genuine ribbons could compromise Zebra’s reputation for providing quality product and services to our customers. The key objective in writing this letter is to outline the steps we are taking in support of Zebra’s commitment to quality and security.
To ensure optimal performance, Zebra card printers are designed to work only with Zebra True Colours® i Series ribbons. Since ribbons are a key component of print quality and reliability, it is important that customers use ribbons specifically designed to work with Zebra card printers. Image quality and durability testing conducted on samples of these non-genuine ribbons clearly show that the genuine Zebra ribbons are superior to the non-genuine ribbons and deliver the best results for Zebra printers. We have posted the results of these tests, performed both by our ribbon supplier and by an independent lab, on our partner web site for your reference. Additionally, we have observed that printer operation with these non-genuine ribbons is unpredictable depending on the printer model and firmware version installed.
Zebra has invested heavily in the development of innovative printer products, supplies and services. We have determined that our intellectual property rights have been violated by the providers of these non-genuine ribbons. We are determined to protect our intellectual property rights and have initiated legal action against entities involved in manufacturing and marketing the non-genuine ribbons.
As you know, Zebra has recently announced significantly enhanced warranty coverage for printers and print heads. These changes reflect our confidence in the product. Please note that our existing warranty includes provisions to deny coverage if damage to printer or the print head is attributed to the use of non-genuine ribbons. Because of the significant impact ribbons have on printer reliability, image quality and print head life, additional warranty changes, effective November 1, 2009, will specify that use of non-Zebra ribbons will void the printer warranty for printers purchased on or after November 1, 2009. The warranty terms will continue to be same for printers sold prior to November 1, 2009.
